Last weekend I set up dual-boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop. Everything went fine and I'm really liking Ubuntu so far. (A few years ago I dual-booted a desktop with Windows XP and Debian also, so I'm not completely new to this process.)

However, the only problem I'm having is that I have no audio in Ubuntu. It works fine in XP, both before I installed Ubuntu and now when I boot to XP with both installed. I had a look around Google and found a few people with similar problems, but none of the suggestions seemed to help.

I have two sound cards, one built-in and one additional. I originally bought the additional because I could never get the built-in card to work in XP. I had the built-in card disabled in the BIOS, and Ubuntu (with aplay -l) was only showing the additional card, as expected. I enabled the built-in card and Ubuntu picked it up, but setting the audio to use that card still had no effect.

The additional card is a Creative EV1938 (so it's fairly old).

I've run alsamixer for both cards and made sure all of the settings are at 100% but still no love.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I upgraded to Ubuntu Karmic Koala, and all seemed to be okay for a while, and then I upgraded fifteen packages which were not upgraded, without first taking careful note of which packages those were. (Yes, I know, this isn't particularly clever, but it's always worked in the past.)

In any case, my desktop is now slow to the point of unusability. (I have some panel applets, tomboy, tasque, ubuntu one and dropbox going) but I can only open one cpu-intensive application at a time now, and it is painful to use; i.e. Firefox or Totem, pick one, and don't expect to get anything like work done.

When I look at top, I don't see any processes using lots of CPU cycles or memory except Xorg. (I don't know if Xorg normally uses lots of cpu/memory; I almost always run top as top -u, I only started running it for the whole system when the system started slowing down.)

Does anyone know of a good reference to explain what I'm seeing with top, or know of another way to find out why my computer is so slow, or have any suggestions generally?

Worst to worst, I can backup the home drive to my external hard drive and do a clean re-install, but I'd rather not.

Reposted from my journal, because I can't get over how helpful this is. It has been very slightly edited for the more linux-savvy audience here, but I probably still over-explain things :o)

I'm not talking about using keyboard shortcuts to copy/paste, print, rename folders/files, and all that. I'm talking about using keyboard shortcuts to open often-used folders and files. Why didn't anyone tell me about this? It's only the most brilliant thing EVER!!

Like, most of this post was composed in a specific plain-text document, which I can open from anywhere by hitting Alt+P. The minute I think of something I'd like to post on, I don't have to go online and find my draft post at DW, or open some program. I can just hit Alt+P, type out my thoughts, hit Ctrl+S to save and Alt+F4 to close. My fingers never have to leave the keyboard!

It can also be used for sneaksy things, like hiding folders you don't want people to trip over (like e.g. I hide my fandom folder). But in the olden days, hiding folders also meant more time spent finding them, yourself. Now I can open my fandom folder by the mere hitting of two keyboard keys. Have I mentioned how brilliant this is??

Ubuntu how-to, can doubtlessly be tailored to work in your OS )

I know an interest in Linux doesn't necessarily mean an interest in Comp Sci, but I figure there will be an overlap, thus many of you will find the following page brings a smile:

Right now, I use Ubuntu, which occasionally feels a whee bit sluggish (particularly when I use FF, as I'm still using 3.0; I haven't quite wanted to do the upgrade to 3.5 before it was in the official repos. I am giving deep, deep thought to just switching to Chromium.)

I got a new-to-me laptop and put Xubuntu on it, which seems zippier, but frustrating to customize (Particularly the menus, I have to edit and create .desktop files, which is not exactly a barrel of monkeys, but not the least fun time I've ever had either.)

I was wondering if anyone were familiar with LXDE, how it is to use, whether it has a menu editor, where I would go for tips and tricks? Thanks for any help you can give.

Curious:

Crazy, right? I know!

Benzaiten reminds me a fair amount of Drivel, but it has real tags support (it imports those suckers! it creates a filter so you can avoid using old, useless tags).

The only really weirdness I've so far discovered in its use is that, because the Insert <lj user=> menu is tied to the Friends list, it doesn't work. (Inserting comms via the menu <lj comm=> works fine with Dreamwidth.) Also, of course, whatever friendslist checking and friends management it theoretically does does not touch the reading list or the circle.

In any case, I'm liking it so far, and if you've been wanting to use a client, I think this is a good alternative to some of the older, less developed ones. I'm about to drop a bug in fub's ear about the Dreamwidth incompatibilities and offer him an invite code. I'll point him at the wiki in general, but does anyone know where specifically he should be looking to find out how to adapt the client to DW, if he chooses to make that move?

I've been using Ubuntu as my primary OS since May last year, and while I'm extremely happy with it, I would like to become more Linux-savvy.

I'm looking for another newbie-friendly/newbie-semi-friendly distro to dual-boot with Ubuntu, to see what the differences are, etc. - any recs?

(P.S. I've been giving OpenSolaris - I know it's not Linux - a couple of goes over the last weeks, but in the end, I just could not get it to play nice with Ubuntu, so I gave it up. Very shiny OS, though!)

Hello! First post here. I'm relatively new to linux. I've been running Ubuntu Hardy (dual-boot, with a dying copy of Windows XP) for a couple months now on my laptop and enjoying it immensely. I'm looking into purchasing a new computer and was considering buying a Dell laptop with Ubuntu installed. There seem to be two choices, an Inspiron and an XPS. I was wondering if anybody had any experience (favorable or, more importantly, otherwise) with such systems from Dell...

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give!

Hello all.

I hope you are all enjoying the community and finding it useful.

One Member has requested that I turn off customized comment pages for the community.
The request was made because:

[non customized pages].. would be beneficial to current and future comm members and comm passers-by, who [might] prefer simple comment pages over customized - , it [should] makes pages much more reader-friendly.
I - as I am sure you do - want the community to be as open and as accessible as possible to everyone.

So, I've currently turned off customized comments. Below is a poll. I would like to hear from you - the community members - regards this point.

Should customized comments come back? Should they stay the way they are now, or do you just now care either way?

On occasion, I like to use a text only browser. I have been using elinks, which I like a lot because you can use the mouse with it and it supports tabs and tables.

However, it does not support the <ins> and <del> tags, which I tend to use a lot.

Can anyone recommend an alternate text only browser? Mouse interaction is nice but not essential, and I could live without tabs (although I don't want to), but I really do want table support.

Thanks.

Hey folks, just a heads up for the Fedora fans, 11 has been released as of Tuesday. Has anyone upgraded yet? Anyone interested?

There is a nice article on new features here: Top 10 Features of Fedora 11 Leonidas

Most notable to me include:

  • 20 Seconds Boot-up

  • ext 4 to be default file system

  • ability to import Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders (PST files) directly in Evolution.

  • support for Microsoft Exchange's MAPI protocol. This is the protocol that Microsoft Outlook uses to communicate with Exchange.

  • Support for multiple monitors and projectors

I'm a bit excited by the thought that one more M$ only protocol has been brought into the OSS fold. Since I don't keep up with Ubuntu at all, are these things already available?

I'm a fairly computer-savvy chick -- as long as that computer is running Mac OS or Windows. I know tiny, microscopic amounts of linux-y goodness. I want to change this!

I've got a late 2008 aluminum unibody MacBook and I'd like to dual boot it, 10.5 and Ubuntu 9.04. To ensure no human error on my part, I requested the DVD rather than burned my own (Okay, it's mostly 'cause I had no blank DVDs at the moment, but still.). It arrived and I want to install it -- but I don't really speak linux.

Other than the pages at http://help.ubuntu.com, is there another place for MacBook-specific installs for Linux n00bs? Any help will make you my new BFF. ^_^

I recently checked out a number of different terminal emulators, with the intent of changing my default terminal emulator. I thought folks here might find my results mildly interesting.
my setup and my criteria )
I arranged my results into those which have transparency and those which don't, since the ones that don't are ones I am not interested in. Also, there were some that simply didn't work for me.

Note that the figures for memory are Virtual/Resident, and I found out the information by running
ps -eo 'pid, user, vsz, rsz, args' | grep program name
the terminals with transparency )
the terminals without transparency )
the terminals which wouldn't run for me )

I've got an incredibly old laptop that I would like to turn into a thin client for my lounge. The problem is that it's got no network connectivity and only a floppy drive. I'm thinking of buying a PCMCIA ethernet card and CD-ROM drive for the machine. But I'm wary of buying something that won't work with Linux.

Has anyone got any recommendations for PCMCIA ethernet cards and/or CD-ROMs that will work with Linux?

Shocked this hasn't already been posted!

Show us a picture of your desktop and what's running; what distro you're running, any reasons behind weird configurations, if you're using conky or an app launcher, anything.
I'm going to dive right in and post mine. I upgraded from Hardy to Jaunty a few days ago so I haven't really had time to mess about with mine. I normally use a gdevilspie'd TweetDeck functioning as my background but I'm too lazy to install AIR at the moment!
Feel free to make any suggestions or ask any questions.

This is a repost from : http://getting-started.dreamwidth.org/20466.html

I have been working with [livejournal.com profile] fub, testing his linux client called Benzaiten for LJ. On a whim, I tried it with Dreamwidth and it worked as a basic client.

I asked [livejournal.com profile] fub to make some changes so he could support Dreamwidth as well as LJ, and his reply was:

I don't have a dreamwidth account, so I don't know what you are talking about in your other feature requests. :P

My questions are:

1) Is there already a full-fledged linux client? If so, could someone point me to it?

2) If not, is there enough support here that I should continue to nudge [livejournal.com profile] fub to work on Benzaiten? What kinds of features would be nice? What should be left off?

FYI: Benzaiten is the Drivel client with cleaner code and more features, for those who were curious.

I've been getting increasingly fed up with Windows lately, and so have been fiddling around with various Linux distros, namely Ubuntu and Mandriva. I soon discovered that my sound card was unsupported, and had basically resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn't be able to really use Linux on this computer. Yesterday, I thought I'd set up a dual boot with OpenSUSE 11.1 (w/ KDE 4.1.3) regardless, and mere hours later found a driver for my sound card.

Installation instructions read thusly:

In terminal,
1) Goto source directory
2) Execute make command as root
make
make install

I know enough to understand what it's telling me to do, but my problem is that I have no idea what to type into the terminal to actually do it. I've been researching commands ever since, but it's taking a while and right now I'd really just like to get my sound card working. Can anyone help me?

What I *seem* to be finding is that when I post manually through the site interface, my automatic-crossposting settings work; but when I post using Logjam, the entry isn't crossposted unless I submit it through the site interface (if I edit it, for example). Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I just read about Quotepad,a Windows program which will automatically take a note from highlighted text if hit Ctrl+Shift+Q.

I was wondering if there was a way to get a similar function with Tomboy notes, or if any other Linux program included this functionality? I can see how it would be dead useful, and the sort of thing which and advanced clipboard manager might handle automatically.
