I've never used EXT4, so I don't know if it'd have game-breaking bugs for me, but when I upgrade to Linux Mint 8 I'm going to set up an EXT4 file system. Just because it's supposed to be faster.

I noticed a marked difference in performance when I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10/ext3 to 9.04/ext4. How much was ext4 and how much was general Ubuntu performance increase, I don't know, but based on reviews I'm inclined to think ext4 played a significant part, and since I haven't experienced any problems with it so far, I'm pretty excited about it :o)

How about 64-bit versus 32-bit? Do you think that helps any? Or do you know?

I only have personal experience with 32-bit. The general opinion of the people on the Danish Ubuntu forum using 64-bit seems to be that it's faster - I don't know about the relation of 64-bit to filesystems, though!

I use ext3 on most of my machines. I just moved to ext4 on my laptop when I did a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 on it. My mythtv partition runs xfs.

And I still answered that I don't know enough about filesystems to have an opinion. Because, really, for the most part, I haven't been able to tell a difference.

Ditto. I'm using ext4 on some systems and ext3 on others; it all seems fine.

I haven't done testing, but there was such a marked difference for me when I installed 9.04/ext4 - I can't imagine it was all general Ubuntu enhances. Esp. since the install of 9.10 didn't really seem noticeably faster (well, a bit, maybe).

I noticed a huge difference in performance, memory wise and in hard disk calls since moving from 8.10 to 9.10.

xfs and reiserfs, one on / and the other on /home, but I can't remember which is which :P

On Ubuntu? What's the reason for going against the default filesystem? You have a lot of big files, or?

Why? Well because I am a cross platform user almost daily (Linux, OSX and Win7), and fat 32 is the ONLY thing that plays nice with all three !
