Thanks for the advice! I decided to reinstall linux mint 9, not upgrade it. According to the Ubuntu forums I'd looked through, it all seemed to be a problem with linux Mint 10 especially, and I prefer the look of LM9. So... I'm sticking with it.

I guess I just won't let it update and not install too many things.
