Ubuntu Unity

I just upgraded today, because I was hoping to avoid problems like the one I am having.

I have seen several suggestions that, in order to put a launcher item on the launcher, one should create a shortcut on the desktop by right-clicking.

When I right-click my desktop, I don't get a right click menu. From what I've been able to tell via elgoog, while this was deliberate in 10.10, I should be able to right click the desktop in 11.04. Is there some secret setting I need to change in order to do that?

Thanks for any help.

I don't know, but I can tell you the other way of putting things on your launcher; run the app as normal, then right-click its launcher entry and tell it to stay there.

+1 I usually do this to get things on the launcher.

For what it's worth, I do get a right-click menu when I click the desktop in Natty. Definitely still has its bugs and weirdnesses.

You can switch back to Gnome in 11.04.

Go to your Login preferences for that.
