I was thinking, after I ran across a number of these threads recently in my attempts to get Cairo Dock running properly, that it would be nice to have one in a more familiar and fannish space. (Not that my desktop is fannish, at the moment, but I can't quite imagine finding pre-raphaelites in one of the threads I perused either.)

Is there any interest? Pictures can easily be hosted at TinyPic or ImageShack, which both allow uploading without a user account, if anyone doesn't already have photo hosting. I will go first in the comments anyway!

Cairo Dock, Conky, Gaia08 GTK + Emerald, and the Compiz Expo plugin in action. The dock icons are Token and Awoken which I'm working on recoloring.

Oh, I can top that, I don't have any icons on my desktop at all. :-)

I randomise my wallpaper, but you can't really show that in a screenshot.

do you know a good easy conky tutorial. I downloaded it and wanted to use it (for e-mail and some rss monitoring, I'm so untechnical I don't care how much cpu i'm loading or how hot the computer is) but all of the documentation was kind of tl;dr.

Hmmm... no, not really, conky's kind of all over the place from what I've found. That is, the centralized stuff is tl;dr, and the brief and useful comments are everywhere. However, I was able to figure out the features to do what I wanted easily enough by googling. I haven't read anything about email, but I did skim a brief explanation for RSS embedding in my searches. Haven't saved it, but it didn't look too hard. Maybe ".Conkyrc RSS feed" or something along those lines?

My desktop is kinda boring, unless you're me, but I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 with Docky on Gnome, with the Equinox Evolution Light theme and a hell of a lot of Conky scripting.

The small computer is my brand new netbook with Ubuntu 11.04, using Unity, same theme, and a little Conky.



As much conky stuff as I've done, it's mostly a case of download something & keep tweaking until I like it enough.
Will snap some actual screenshots if anyone wants to see the theme or anything?

The netbook panel looks blue! But I guess it's just tilted that way? Also I totally considered installing the Notify OSD Conky you've got there. It wasn't the feature I wanted, though, and I figured it would be a lot of trouble to take it apart in order to replace the icons. I find your big Conky panels really neat! I would actually like to see screenshots of them, or perhaps you have a link or name or hint about the codes? They look so sleek and polished! I'm a total beginner with Conky, but extremely infatuated. Investigating a good Conky output for my calendar is on my to-do list.

Yeah, actually the theme on the little one is grey, and it's just tilted a little funny. I grabbed up the Notify OSD conky just because it was small enough to not be obnoxious on the little screen and as we can see I tend towards excess...



There's the full desktop with all the conky madness. No I don't really need all of that, really, all the time.

That's not totally exhaustive 'tho. The pane on the left is .conkyrc the one in the middle is .conkyrc-weather and the right is .conkyrc-todo, I use the script to start them all (run as a Startup application from my desktop.) The background script gets the transparent & rounded corners bits right.
