Ok, posting this in case anyone else has the same problem.
Solution to wifi woes in 11.04.
First add the maverick main repository to software sources. [ how to ] you want the main one.
Second, go into the synaptics package manger and search for maverick backports.
Install wireless-generic backport.
reboot
job done.

No you can still use Gnome, just select "Ubuntu Classic" in the session manager menu at the login screen. You can also disable the Unity module in CompizConfig manager and it'll default over to Gnome.
